Services that support efforts to avoid disasters

Consulting and Advisory Services for avoiding disasters

Risk Insight Consulting helps organisations and teams to undertake activities to help avoid disasters through the following approach:

  1. ‘Start with why’ by understanding the context and clearly defining the need and what success looks like.
  2. Define clear goals and objectives to achieve success, with a clear agreement of consulting / advisory deliverables and services to achieve them.
  3. Use a project management approach to delivering the agreed services, with flexibility to change as required.
  4. Deliver results per an agreed sequence and schedule, and track performance with regular reviews against goals and objectives.

Data security and data privacy is of paramount importance for all disaster risk reduction work. Data and documentation can be retained in-house or stored through a secure hosted solution.

A body of work on how disasters can be avoided

The Disasters Avoided initiative

The Disasters Avoided initiative began in September 2022. It is a joint initiative between Risk Insight Consulting and senior academics at UCL (London) and UMBC (Washington, DC).

The initiative focuses on how action can be taken to avoid disasters, and it includes examples and case studies that support research and influence policy.

The Disasters Avoided initiative includes the following:

  1. A research-informed model that describes six factors to avoid disasters.
  2. Examples and case studies of how disasters are and have been avoided.
  3. Publications and communications to share research and case studies.

Data security and data privacy is of paramount importance. Data and documentation can be retained in-house or stored through a secure hosted solution.

The Disasters Avoided model

Find out about the Disasters Avoided model

Through research and documentation of case studies, we are discovering patterns and trends which we are distilling into an emerging model for avoiding disasters.

This emerging model is a "work in progress". It does not cover all aspects of disaster risk reduction and management; its purpose is to highlight commonalities in the actions people are taking to avoid disasters around the world. There is no "right or wrong" single answer to how we approach the goal to avoid disasters - understanding the context of a situation is always vital.

Disaster Risk Research

A range of research is undertaken into disaster risk reduction and how to avoid disasters. Research work includes the following:

  • Policy papers.
  • Advisory and technical papers.
  • Research into matters relating to specific geographic areas (e.g. small islands, cities, specific countries/regions).
  • Research into matters relating to focal areas that can span across geographic areas (e.g. air pollution, wildfires, flooding).

Research projects for clients can be undertaken in a range of different ways to suit a particular context, requirement and objective.
